What Are Varicose Veins?

What are varicose veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that commonly appear on the legs and feet due to poor blood flow.

Varicose veins are often blue or dark purple and may bulge under the skin, causing discomfort, heaviness, or aching in the legs.

While many see them as a cosmetic issue, they are usually a sign of underlying venous insufficiency, a vein disease that should not be ignored. If left untreated, varicose veins can lead to complications like ulcers, blood clots, or debilitating chronic pain.

How Did I Develop Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are very common, affecting 30% of people at some point in their lives. Their root cause is a vein disease known as venous insufficiency, where the vein valves become damaged allowing a downward flow of blood in the leg veins.

What causes varicose veins in the legs

Our veins are supposed to transport blood from our feet up to our heart. But gravity is constantly pulling our blood downward.

Inside of our leg veins are tiny valves that open and close, allowing blood to flow upward but closing to prevent the blood from flowing downwards.

The problem of venous insufficiency happens when the valves wear down and become damaged. Damaged valves leak and allow blood to flow downward and pool in the lower legs.

This pooling of blood causes a lot of added pressure within the leg veins, so the leg veins start to expand. And this is how varicose veins are formed.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Varicose Vein Removal St Pete FL

Varicose veins only get worse with time, if left untreated. Not only can they become a cosmetic concern, but they can also cause many other debilitating symptoms, such as:

Leg pain or aching – A heavy, throbbing, or burning sensation in the legs

Swelling in the legs and ankles – Fluid buildup, especially after standing or sitting for long periods

Itching and irritation – The skin around varicose veins may feel itchy or irritated

Skin discoloration – Brown or bluish patches near the affected veins

Restless legs – A constant urge to move your legs, often worsening at night

Muscle cramps – Especially at night or after long periods of inactivity

Ulcers or sores – In severe cases, untreated varicose veins can lead to slow-healing leg ulcers

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms associated with varicose veins, it is recommended to have a vein consultation with a vascular specialist as soon as possible.

Here at Pinellas Vascular, our top-rated vascular specialists serving St. Pete, all of Pinellas County and the Tampa Bay area, use the most advanced minimally-invasive vein treatment techniques available anywhere in the world to treat your varicose veins.

First, the deeper malfunctioning veins that are causing your varicose veins must be treated.

These state-of-the-art procedures are minimally invasive, low-risk vein treatments that are performed right in our offices.

Once these deeper veins are closed, our vein specialists can use stab phlebectomy to physically remove any remaining bulging veins that are visible.

These procedures are performed under local anesthesia, take under one hour to perform, and allow patients to return to their normal daily activities within 24 hours.
