Board-certified vascular surgeon, dr. bunnell explains the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of varicose veins

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are larger blood vessels that have become swollen and twisted. They appear dark blue and stick out from the skin like raised tunnels. Varicose veins can develop anywhere in the body, but usually sprout on the legs and ankles.

A common condition, varicose veins affect approximately half of Americans 50 years of age or older in varying degrees. There is a large genetic component to this disease, and it is common for multiple members of a given family to be affected. In addition, people with lifestyles or jobs that require standing for prolonged periods are also at risk.

How Do We Treat Varicose Veins?

The disease is diagnosed and classified in severity on physical examination and ultrasound imaging. Utilization of non-invasive color-duplex ultrasound technology allows Dr. Bunnell to identify the source of the varicose veins and develop a precise treatment plan. We use the most modern catheter-based technology to repair varicose veins, effectively sealing the leaking valves and eliminating the varicose veins without the need for ligation and stripping.

The procedure, performed in an outpatient setting under either local or general anesthesia, usually takes one to two hours. Patients recover for approximately one hour and are discharged home. Patients will need to wear a compression dressing for two to three days. There is little or no postoperative pain, and patients are able and encouraged to get up and walk around immediately. Return to work and full activities are faster than with traditional ligation and stripping.

Using Varithena® micro-foam injections and laser ablation, Pinellas Vascular has achieved 100% effectiveness.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are smaller, red, purple, and blue vessels that also twist and turn. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin, similar to varicose veins. They are typically visible on the legs and face.

A common condition, spider veins result from damaged veins or burst blood vessels. They are typically painless and do not cause health problems, but some people may wish to treat them for cosmetic reasons. A variety of treatment options can help improve the appearance of spider veins or remove them altogether.

How Do We Treat Spider Veins?

Since spider veins usually form due to the deeper malfunctioning veins, it is important to treat the deeper veins first, then remove the spider veins.  After venous insufficiency and varicose veins treatments are completed, spider veins may still be visible on the legs.

At Pinellas Vascular we use sclerotherapy injections to remove spider veins on the legs. During a sclerotherapy session, a medicated solution is injected into the individual spider veins using a tiny needle. The medicated solution causes the tiny veins to shrivel up and disappear.

It’s important to note that more than one sclerotherapy session may be required to complete your spider vein removal.
