What Are Varicose Veins?

What are varicose veins

Varicose veins form when vein valves stop working properly, which causes blood to pool instead of flowing back to the heart. This added pressure makes the veins stretch, twist, and become enlarged. They are more likely to appear on the legs and feet because those areas handle more pressure from standing or walking for long periods.

These veins are usually blue or purple and may bulge from the skin. While some people see them as a minor issue, untreated varicose veins can lead to pain, swelling, ulcers, or even blood clots.

What Causes Varicose Veins To Form?

Varicose veins affect almost one-third of people at some point in their lives. They develop due to a vein problem called venous insufficiency, where the small valves inside the veins become weak or damaged. This allows blood to flow backward and collect, causing swelling in the leg veins.

What causes varicose veins in the legs

Our veins are responsible for carrying blood from the feet back up to the heart. However, gravity pulls the blood downward, making it harder for veins to work properly. To help with this, small valves inside the veins open to let blood move upward and close to stop it from flowing backward.

When these valves get weak or damaged, they do not close completely. This causes blood to leak backward and collect in the lower legs, increasing pressure inside the veins.

The extra pressure causes the veins to stretch and swell. This leads to the visible, bulging veins known as varicose veins, which can cause pain, heaviness, or discomfort in the legs.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Varicose Vein Removal St Pete FL

Varicose veins only get worse with time if left untreated. Not only can they become a cosmetic concern, but they can also cause many other debilitating symptoms, such as:

Leg pain or aching – A heavy, throbbing, or burning sensation in the legs

Swelling in the legs and ankles – Fluid buildup, especially after standing or sitting for long periods

Itching and irritation – The skin around varicose veins may feel itchy or irritated

Skin discoloration – Brown or bluish patches near the affected veins

Restless legs – A constant urge to move your legs, often worsening at night

Muscle cramps – Especially at night or after long periods of inactivity

Ulcers or sores – In severe cases, untreated varicose veins can lead to slow-healing leg ulcers

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms associated with varicose veins, it is recommended to have a vein consultation with a vascular specialist as soon as possible.

Board Certified Vascular Surgeon Dr. Bunnell Performing Laser Vein Removal

Varicose Vein Doctor St Pete FL

At Pinellas Vascular, our skilled vein doctors proudly serve the Tampa and St. Pete areas with some of the most advanced varicose vein treatment options available. We focus on using safe, modern methods that help improve your leg circulation and relieve discomfort caused by damaged veins.

To begin treatment, we focus on the deeper veins that are not working properly. These veins often allow blood to flow the wrong way, which causes swelling and bulging. Treating these deeper veins helps restore proper blood flow in the legs.

Dr. Bunnell, a board-certified vascular surgeon, uses laser vein treatment and a special foam called Varithena to seal off the damaged veins. These methods are gentle, do not require large cuts, and are done right in our office.

After the deeper veins are treated, the visible bulging veins can be removed using a simple technique called stab phlebectomy. These treatments are done with local anesthesia and allow a quick return to normal activities.

Varicose Vein Removal With Varithena® Microfoam

Varithena® Microfoam is a popular, quick treatment at Pinellas Vascular for varicose veins. This simple in-office procedure uses a special foam injected into the affected veins to close them. This helps improve blood flow in the legs and reduces the appearance and discomfort of varicose veins.
